What is astigmatism?
In astigmatism, the curvature of the cornea is not the same in all axes: instead of being round like a football, the cornea is flattened like a rugby ball. This leads to distortion of images both at distance and near. Often, myopia and hyperopia are associated with a certain degree of astigmatism.
Correction of astigmatism
Surgery for astigmatism is possible, whether isolated or associated with another optical defect. We can correct astigmatism up to 6 diopters, even when associated with other visual defects such as myopia, hyperopia, and presbyopia. The preferred techniques are LASIK, Femtosecond laser, PKR, or Trans PKR. As with other visual defects, laser correction takes 20 to 30 seconds per eye, using our Schwind Amaris 1050 laser, the fastest in the world.
