What is presbyopia?
Around the age of 45, we all become presbyopic. This presbyopia is linked to the loss of elasticity of the lens, it leads to a progressive loss of accommodation and requires the wearing of a reading correction. Myopes with presbyopia are often able to read without glasses, because to a certain extent presbyopia compensates for near myopia, but in distance vision, the person will always keep the same degree of myopia, despite presbyopia.
Presbyopia can be either isolated, starting around the age of 45, or added to a pre-existing defect (myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism).
Correction of presbyopia
Surgical correction of presbyopia has made a lot of progress and is now very effective, however not all patients are operable and only a preliminary assessment will allow the right indications to be drawn up.
Correction is often done with Lasik or femtosecond laser and the correction profile can be either monovision technique or multifocal correction, such as Presbymax, with very good results when the surgical indications and patient selection have been well done upstream.
It is always advisable to first simulate the future vision that the patient will recover after refractive surgery either on trial corrective lenses or, ideally, contact lenses that will be provided to you for a preliminary test.
The operation is done on our Schwind Amaris 1050 RS Laser and lasts approximately twenty seconds per eye. The result is obtained the next day, but it often takes a few days or even weeks for the patient to get used to this new vision.
If the patient is not accustomed to this new vision, a touch-up is always possible.
