Glaucoma management

  • Blood pressure measurement with a non-contact tonometer.
  • Pachymeter measurement of corneal thickness because the measured tension figure must be weighted according to the thickness of the cornea.
  • Examination of the iridocorneal angle and anterior chamber depth of the eye which predisposes to acute angle-closure glaucoma.
  • Fundus examination.
  • Examination of the Octopus Computerized Visual Field.
  • Examination of the optic nerve with RTVue OCT, the ultimate in ophthalmological diagnostic devices, allowing ultra-fine analysis of the optic nerve and ganglion cells which are the first to be affected in the case of early glaucoma.

The treatment is most often a treatment with eye drops.

It should be noted that once it has been instituted, it is very rarely interrupted, which is why (especially in the case of a relatively young patient) it will be necessary to confirm the certainty of glaucoma before treating. Simple ocular hypertension often only requires monitoring.

Sometimes in the event of poor compliance with treatment, or in other indications laser treatment will be proposed: painless and practically devoid of any side effects, its drawback is that its effects sometimes fade after a few years, requiring re-treatment;

It is only in cases that are resistant to any medical therapy that surgery will be proposed, which is relatively rare.

Monitoring should be regular with eye pressure taken every 6 months and Visual Field and/or OCT examination every year.
