Retinoschisis is a rare genetic condition that mainly affects young men (10-20 years old). It involves damage to the retina with an accumulation of fluid that causes it to detach.
This pathology causes a progressive decrease in visual acuity which is observed in learning at school, often associated with hyperopia.
Several lesions appear:
– Bilateral macular involvement called central retinoschisis, on FO we see cystoid lodges in the foveola (center of the retina) and in stars on the periphery of it.
– Peripheral retinal lesions
– Vitreous lesions that cause bilateral haze.
Macular damage can become complicated by macular hole or even macular atrophy.
There is no treatment for this pathology, it will focus on the treatment of complications that may arise from it, in particular retinal detachment.
