The retina is a membrane about 0.5 mm thick that covers about 75% of the inner surface of the eye and lines the back of the eye.

The retina contains nerve cells that allow light rays to be captured and then transformed into nerve impulses to reach the brain.

It therefore transforms light into electrical signals which are carried to the brain by the optic nerve.

The Macula

The macula, or yellow spot, is the central region of the retina, located close to the optical axis.

The name yellow spot comes from the fact that this area has a yellowish coloration compared to the rest of the retina.

This is where visual acuity is at its maximum, meaning it provides the most precise vision.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
